Description

These soft and sweet heart-shaped sugar cookies are perfect for Valentine’s Day, easy to make and fun to decorate.

Ingredients

  • 3 sticks (339 grams) unsalted butter, at cool room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups (300 grams) granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon almond extract (optional)
  • 4 1/2 cups (572 grams) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup (170 grams) semisweet or white chocolate chips
  • 2 teaspoons refined coconut oil or shortening
  • Food coloring (if using white chocolate, if desired)
  • Sprinkles (for decorating, if desired)

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  2. Mix in the eggs and extracts.
  3. Add the flour and baking powder and mix until just combined.
  4. Divide the dough, roll it between parchment, and chill for at least 1 hour.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line baking sheets.
  6. Cut heart shapes and place them on the sheets.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes until the edges are just golden.
  8. Cool for 5 minutes, then finish cooling on racks.
  9. Melt chocolate with oil and dip or drizzle the cookies.
  10. Add sprinkles while the chocolate is wet.
  11. Let the chocolate set before serving.

Notes

For added flavor, consider adding lemon or orange zest to the dough. You can also use colored royal icing instead of chocolate for decoration.
