A cozy, crowd-pleasing breakfast casserole that is easy to prepare, customizable, and perfect for feeding a group on a lazy morning.
Ingredients
- 6 cups cubed day-old bread or 4 cups thawed shredded hash browns
- 10 large eggs
- 1 and 3/4 cups milk or half-and-half
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon pepper
- Pinch of garlic powder
- 1 pound cooked breakfast sausage, bacon, or diced ham
- 2 cups shredded cheese (e.g., sharp cheddar, Gruyere, mozzarella)
- Optional add-ins: sautéed onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, spinach, kale, cherry tomatoes, or roasted broccoli
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Lightly toast the cubed bread if using.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder.
- In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, lay down the starch base (bread or hash browns).
- Scatter the cooked protein and any veggies over the base.
- Sprinkle most of the cheese over the top.
- Pour the egg mixture over the layered ingredients.
- Top with the remaining cheese.
- Bake on the middle rack for 45-55 minutes until center is set and top is browned.
- Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Notes
To make ahead, assemble up to 24 hours in advance and refrigerate. Let sit at room temperature for 20-30 minutes before baking.
