A creamy and comforting mac and cheese recipe that’s kid-friendly and perfect for potlucks.

  • 8 oz elbow macaroni
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups warm milk
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese, grated
  • 1 cup Gruyere cheese, grated
  • 1 cup Monterey Jack cheese, grated
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp mustard powder (optional)
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup melted butter (for topping)
  • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a rolling boil. Add macaroni and cook until just shy of al dente. Drain and toss with a little butter.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat and whisk in flour until smooth. Cook for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly whisk in warm milk and cream, stirring until sauce thickens to coat a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat and fold in grated cheeses until melted and smooth. Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and mustard powder.
  6. Toss the pasta with the cheese sauce and spread into a buttered baking dish.
  7. Mix breadcrumbs with melted butter and sprinkle over the top along with parmesan cheese.
  8. Bake for 25–30 minutes until bubbly and golden. Let rest for 7–10 minutes before serving.

Use a mix of cheeses for the best flavor and texture. Allow the mac and cheese to rest before serving for a creamy consistency.
