- 15 oz boxed cake mix, flavor of your choice
- 1 can/tub white frosting
- 16 oz marshmallows (about 1.5 packages)
- 2 lbs powdered sugar, sifted
- 4 tbsp water
- Vegetable shortening for greasing
- 1 tube black decorator gel
Instructions
- Prepare the boxed cake mix in two 9-inch round pans. Cool and chill in the freezer for an hour.
- Trim the uneven tops with a serrated knife, then cut a 1.5-inch wide section from the middle of each cake layer and set aside.
- Slide the two sides of each cake together to make ovals, adjusting as necessary.
- Assemble the layers with a layer of white frosting between them and add a crumb coat. Freeze for a couple of hours.
- Smooth the remaining frosting by misting it with water.
- Grease a large microwaveable bowl and the mixer bowl with shortening. Sift the powdered sugar and reserve about one cup.
- Microwave marshmallows with water until melted, stirring intermittently.
- Add the melted marshmallows to the powdered sugar and mix until a dough forms.
- Wrap the fondant in plastic and let rest for at least 2 hours.
- Knead the fondant, color if desired, roll to 1/4 inch thickness, and cover the cake.
- Use black decorator gel to create spider webs and cut eyes from fondant for decoration.
Notes
Freeze the cake layers after baking for easier cutting and assembly. Use vibrant food coloring for the fondant to match Spiderman’s costume.
